Shot Blasting / Sand Blasting vs Acid Dipping
We recently encountered a classic Jaguar E-Type that had been acid dipped and coated, in desperate need of attention. This is because the corrosive acid had gotten into the seams of the classic Jaguar and had not been able to escape, essentially rotting the vehicle shell from the inside-out.
Acid dipping was a very popular method in the last decade or so, gaining popularity from television shows like Car SOS, however time has proven this method is largely flawed. This means more and more restoration experts are returning to methods of shot blasting.
Shot blasting, or sand blasting as it was formerly known, is much more forgiving to cars that have been filled or lead loaded in the past. Acid dipping eats away at any repairs to the shell, often leaving devastating results. Sand blasting classic cars offers not only an effective and less destructive form of rust removal, but also leaves a keyed surface ready for paint works. This means the shell can either go straight to your bodyshop, or we can coat in an anti-corrosive primer to protect the clean metal in the meantime.
Dry Ice Blasting & Soda Blasting
Dry Ice Blasting and Soda Blasting are alternative forms of Shot Blasting also popularised by the classic car restoration industry. These methods are typically used for lighter applications such as cleaning up components, as they would struggle to remove properly adhered paint coatings or adverse corrosion in a timely manor. Traditional shot blasting, using the correct media, is the most effective way of blasting a classic car.
