Historic Railways Estate and Hammond ECS recently enlisted the help of Intercity to carry out the refurbishment of Black Bourton Bridge in Bampton, Oxfordshire. Black Bourton Bridge is a disused railway bridge that has since been repurposed as a pedestrian walking route close to RAF Brize Norton in Carterton.
As with all bridges of this type, our first task was to safely extract samples of the existing coating to send to the laboratory for lead content testing. Once the results of the samples were returned, we could begin to remove the old coating in a safe and controlled manor via methods of shot blasting. With the historic bridge fully enclosed and restricted from the public, we arrived with one of our modular decontamination units and our lead trained shot blasting team on site to begin to shot blast the old coating from the steel structure and clean the metal to Sa2.5 standard.
Once the metal structure of the bridge was properly shot blasted, cleaned, and profiled, we then apply the weatherproof coatings system. For this bridge restoration project, as with most Historic Railways projects, we applied our signature multi-stage 2K Epoxy-Hybrid system; offering up to 30-years to first maintenance. This is a very popular protective system for use on steel structures, particularly those exposed to weather conditions such as structures like this. The final decorative finish is a Satin Black as requested by Historic Railways.
