Intercity Contractors, enlisted by Historic Railways Estate and Hammond ECS, recently carried out the restoration of St John’s Bridge in Devizes, Wiltshire. The bridge is a disused railway bridge that has, like many others up and down the UK, been repurposed as a pedestrian walking route.
As per usual for these bridge shot blasting projects, our first task was to safely extract samples of the existing coating to send to the laboratory for lead content testing. Once we receive the results of the samples, we could begin to remove the old coating in a safe and controlled manor via the method of bridge shot blasting. With the historic bridge fully enclosed and restricted from the public, we arrived with one of our modular decontamination units and our lead trained bridge shot blasting team to begin to shot blast the old coating from the steel bridge structure and clean the metal to Sa2.5 standard before coating.
Once the metal of the bridge was shot blasted to be properly cleaned and profiled, we could begin to apply the weatherproof coating system. For this bridge restoration project in Devizes, Wiltshire we applied our signature multi-stage 2K Epoxy-Hybrid system, offering up to 30-years protection to first maintenance. This is a popular protective system for use on steel structures, particularly those exposed to weather conditions such as this bridge is. The final finish is a Satin Black as requested by Historic Railways.
