Dead Dog Bridge Shot Blasting – Central London

London

The shot blasting London team have recently been working on the restoration of Grade II-listed Camden canal bridge “Dead Dog Bridge”. Built in 1846, this bridge is the busiest canal footbridge in the country with over one million visits a year to cross the Regent’s Canal. The busy crossing is used by both pedestrians and cyclists following the towpath across the canal basin beneath the Camden Interchange Warehouse.

We have been working with the Canal & River Trust to ensure this busy bridge restoration is completed efficiently, causing as little disruption to the public as possible. The bridge will be closed throughout the project, and towpath diversion routes will be in place. The canal will remain open for boats to navigate.

The restoration of the Victorian bridge has been enabled by an award from Postcode Earth Trust thanks to money raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Not only a site of historical significance, Dead Dog Tunnel was used as a double for Q’s top secret underground workshop in 2015’s Bond film Spectre.

Bridge Shot Blasting in Central London

Our side of the restoration consisted of safely removing the old lead paint coating via methods of mobile shot blasting, cleaning of all the metalwork on the period guard rails, or parapets. Our specialist equipment had to be transported by barge due to access restrictions. This included our Low Emission Zone air compressor and dust extraction unit, ensuring the public aren’t exposed to dangerous levels of lead content.

The safe removal of the lead paint coating was made possible thanks to our modular decontamination unit, as our larger mobile decontamination unit could not fit under the restricted height canal bridges. Intercity have all of the necessary equipment to get the job done, no matter the obstacle.

We prepared the metalwork to Sa2.5 standard ready for re-coating in an anti-corrosion paint system in a colour of the customers choosing. The shot blasting process not only removes the old lead paint coating and any surface rust, but also cleans and profiles the metal ready for painting. This ensures the new paint system adheres to the metal surface correctly giving a guaranteed longevity.
